Elonex Laptop...arrives in an Acer box...help!

See later post for what actually arrived.....

Hi,
Just ordered an Elonex Laptop from Next for my Mum, who's tasked me with getting one for her. I must admit, it was a bit of a rush decision - as the laptop was in the VIP sale at £349 down from supposedly £699 and I was on a half hour VIP slot, so I didn't have time to do any research.

Does anyone have any experience of elonex lappys, and is the spec below reasonable for that price?

Thanks, in advance

Never heard of the make myself and as they don't say what processor it has other than dual core it's difficult to tell whether it's good value.

I would say the price you paid is probably an ok price for the spec but nobody would pay £700 for it now. Something like this Toshiba is probably similar to what you have bought but without the tv tuner.

    Thanks Geewhiz,

The processor for this laptop is supposedly a Turion 64x2. I know this because when I was looking at the page I actually ordered from, I googled it to see what intel that equated to!

Find it really strange that no-one has any experience of Elonex! Someone in work has one as a work laptop, and they apparently also sell through littlewoods, but I can't find any info on the web.

    Cheers.

    yes - don't buy it

the reason i'm talking in small caps is because my ****** lap top is broken. Elonex are so rubbish that they went bust last year in the uk. Their hard ware is rubbish, full of faults & glitches, bits fall off them and the support is non existent.

    Any more questions? ;)

it's because they went under. they are still trading in france i think so that's how they can still supply to the uk

Also, i have no driver for my mouse trackpad which is faulty and i have to reboot every hour or so as the wi-fi keeps dropping the connection and won't reconnect. i was given this lap ytop for free after my IBM thinkpad finally broke after 7 years. Even though it was free, it still wasn't worth the money!

also the cd tray has broken off, it keeps freezing for no reason and the battery has lost all of its charge after less than 12 months of use.

The keyboard has intermittant faults too. the speakers are rubbish too as they are not loud enough to hear anything.

oh - and the clip which actually holds the thing shut broke off too, so it won't close properly.

i've worked in IT for the past 12 years and my b/f is a senior support engineer and we both unanamously agree that this lap top is the most shoddy piece of hardware we've ever experienced.

Yes...so did I, but it all related to the Elonex One webbook - and there were no reviews of the 17" laptops.

Thanks for the warnings MrCow. I might look and see what else is available in the Xmas sales and pick up something different - although I've ordered the elonex from Next I can send it back no problemo.

Hi...sorry to ask for help again but I really appreciate the advice i get from these boards.

The laptop arrived today. Sure enough it says Elonex on the casing, but its actually an Acer Extensa 7620z - with only 1GB ram and an 80gb hard drive. It came in a box that says as much, and it has a sticker on the front of the keyboard with it too.

What should I do? Demand a refund? Just stick with what's arrived because at the end of the day its not a bad price for a 17" lappy? Do I need to start it up to double check what the memory and hard drive capacity is, in case its been upgraded? Advice much appreciated.

send it back. It may have a large screen, but the 1GB memory and 80GB HD is rubbish.

looking quickly at comet, this one is considerably larger in spec and only nominally more.

well, firstly you are entitled to a refund as they've obviously just supplied you with anything lying around, did you take a screenshot/print out of the specs on the next sale page? this will help if you did.

as for the price for a 17" laptop, umm, well, it'll do, but personally, with only an 80gb hdd, and 1gb ram, it isn't as much of a bargain as first thought, and also, what processor is it?
