Narcolepsy

Hello,

Ive been on this board bored for a little while now but i mainly just go on the freebies one. Anyway, i was having a look at some of the other boards and saw this so thought i would introduce myself.

Im Spora, im 21, and i am on income support as i suffer from narcolepsy. I was just wondering if there is anyone else around on here with narcolepsy?

I was diganosed with it about 6 months ago (right after i finished uni) and since then i havent been able to work as the dr says to wait till my meds work. Ive tried a couple of types of meds and various dose's and nothing has worked so far :(

I did a quick search to find some posts about narcolepsy but i couldn't find any. There must be some on here surely?

Anyway, just thought i would start a thread incase there are others :)

I've seen posts from friends of people with it. They will come...
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

You receive benefits simply because you fall asleep during the day? Given that I have a friend who manages to work in a factory despite having narcolepsy, I really do wonder what your excuse is.

And people wonder why taxes need to rise....

Blimey Polish, how sympathetic are you?
Not all types of this disorder are controlled by drugs.
I haven't got it but my DH had epilepsy which isn't always controlled by his meds.
It's a nightmare, and I do feel for you Spora. I hope you find the help you need.

  • Epilepsy is a whole different thing however - it's not unreasonable for a person who suffers from fits to be on benefits, due to the nature of them. But narcolepsy? Nothing stopping someone holding down a normal job, particularly as the DDA will force employers to adjust anyway.

In fact, using the DDA to force employers into providing a place for naps could be fun :)

she's claiming benefits which she is entitled to? if anyone is to "blame", it's the government surely?

and that's assuming she shouldn't be entitled to it?

  • Why should someone be entitled to benefits for a condition that can easily be catered for within a full time job?

And yes, the government's actions, particuarly in the uselessness of JobcentrePlus staff to actually find/sort out jobs for people like the OP are dreadful.

I think you are being incredibly judgmental -and ignorant! You have no knowledge of how badly they suffer and the dangers they are in because of their condition-maybe your friend was lucky enough to be a mild sufferer or was on medication that worked-unlike the poster.
    Think they deserve an apology.
Maybe its best to engage brain before you type in future.
