Dry Rot?????

Options
What does dry rot look like?????? We have had a couple of people to look, one thinks it is dry rot another thinks its just because the wood got damp because there is an opening in the eves of the house. The beams in the loft look a little white in places, anyone ?????

  • Here's a webpage with a bit of a visual guide:

White patches in themselves aren't necessarily a problem - can simply be caused by condensation in the loft space.

Who are the "people"? Professionals? if you are seriously concerned, get professionals who have been recommended to you or can provide genuine recommendations to come out - look out for the cowboys!

Before you do anything else, eliminate the "opening" if it lets rain in, but remember that eves should have ventilation to allow circulation of air.

You don't say if it is rotten. Get a screwdriver and dig it in. If it is solid I doubt it will be dry rot. Possibly a bit of staining but you should beware of water getting in. Dry rot has a very distinctive smell as well but if you get it, it will cost a hell of a lot to sort out. It cannot be left as your whole house will be affected.
