I rang them up and asked whether to put my national insurance number in there. Bloke said yes and joked that he didn't know what country that they had copied their form from.

I assumed that this pertains to foreign nationals who have a state identity system. We in the UK don't, so I left it blank. The National Security No. isn't classed as an identity number in the UK, as far as I'm aware.

I left mine blank as well, assuming (wrongly?) it was meant for foreign nationals

It'll be for the ISAs probably.
No. These forms are to claim for maturing fixed savings accounts. That's why I didn't think the N.I. number was relevant . Nobody asked me my N.I. number when I opened my account.

I'm not entering one either (fixed term), I assume, like others it's for foreign nationals. There is no need for them to have your NI number, unless it's for an ISA, for any normal savings it's not relevant, they are probably using the same form for all paper applications.
  • I sent the form off early this morning and just put in my National Insurance number and wrote what it was in brackets, this was just to prevent the form being rejected as mine matures on the 13/01/2009.
