store cards- default notice

Hi,

I accidentally spent £15 over on my store card, and in this month's bill i received a default notice. will this now affect my credit rating? will it affect it a lot and for how long?

Thanks

depends how long it took to pay back. some dont bother if its paid within a week.
  • thanks

i paid them as soon as i realised (making it 7 days late). Do you know if it is worth sending a letter to any of the credit checking companies?

I doubt very much it would affect your credit rating. A few statements ago on mycredit card, the interest applied pushed me over the limit and I was sent a default notice saying I had been charged £12. It did not go on my file.
  • thank you- I feel a bit better now!

I was going to ask something similar! I missed a payment by 4 days, I have had a charge incurred on my statement, is this likely to affect my credit rating? It's the only payment I have ever missed and the a/c has about £20 on it (I'm sure that is irrelevant!!) I'm tidying everything up as I'm looking to apply for a mortgage soon so really don't want anything to get in the way!

Would it be worth me ringing the company and asking them nicely to remove the charge? I have heard it has been done by people in the past as a one off good will gesture.

If it is just 1 missed payment and you have a good history, this won't have any major impact on your credit rating. The company may refund the late payment fee depending on their policy, however, even if they do this, it will not rectify the fact that you missed the payment and this will still be recorded on your file.

Thanks McPete. I'm being tight with the £12 charge  but good to know the main thing, that my rating shouldn't be affected too badly.
  • Easyest way to avoid them is to setup a direct debit for the min payment (with a blanace of £20 though I'm guessing you don't use the card much anyway). I work for a card company and we usually refund the fee if it's the first time a payment has been missed, so I'd ask for it back ;)
