Hi All,
I'm really new to the PS3 scene, so go easy with me.
I'm trying to connect my PS3 to my laptop to stream media. I'm using a Vista Laptop, connected wirelessly to a Net Gear WRG614 v9 router. The laptop also has Kaspersky IS 2009 on it. The PS3 also connects to the router through wireless.
Anyway I have followed the instructions here:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158357
But I can't get the Console to show on WMP 11.
I know very little about firewalls or how to configure them, particularly on a router.
Can anyone help?

Have you been in the Network and Sharing Centre and enabled media sharing?
You don't need to do anything on the router.0 -

I've tried this, and this is where I was expecting the PS3 or Unknown Device to appear, but all I have is an icon for "other users of this PC" with an exlamation mark on the icon. This is the only icon that is available.
I was thinking it maybe my firewall or port sharing that I needed to adjust on the router, or to allow the IP address for the PS3. The problem I have is that the router setup page is just full of jargon and things I have no understanding of.
I chose the Netgear router as it was a common and recognised brand, in the hope that when and if I had issues I could get help from forum members or off the internet.
I know that the router I use is a common setup for a lot of PS3's and PC's. I'm hoping someone may have resolved a similar problem on there setup.
Any ideas anyone? My farts hospitalize small children

If you can't get windows media player to work you should consider Tversity
I did get WM11 working with my PS3 and vista laptop but found tversity a much easier option in the end !
Thanks, geewhiz.
I've read about Tversity, and know it comes recommended for PS3 users.
I'm keen to get things working with WMP11 though, as I'm trying to avoid installing 3rd party software. In practice it should work, so I'd really like to pursue this avenue. My farts hospitalize small children

have you tried disabling the kaspersky firewall while you test this? (but dont forget to enable the firewall again)0

Your PS3 has USB support why dont you just drop your files onto an external HDD and plug it into your PS3 ? I have been doing this for a month and saves a lot of complications streaming media around my house.
Please note that the HDD needs to be formatted in FAT32 format and you need to create 3 folders
-Video
-Pictures
-Music
The PS3 support DIVX , MPEG4 and many other movie files also MP3. You can even copy these files onto your PS3 HDD if you just press triangle and copy. I just purchased a 500gb HDD for my PS3 for £40.00 so now I have a massive libary of music/movies/pictures all viewable on my LCD LG Screen.
The PS3 has a fast CPU and awesome buffer rate , A good thing to purchase is a 16-32Gb USB Pen Drive which you can just slot in as large HDD Drives require Power adaptors.
Hope this helps.0 -

Hi, I tried this and it didn't make any difference, which makes me think it was the router firewall. My farts hospitalize small children

I know what you mean, however I just want the PS3 to do what it says on the box. In my eyes, I've paid a premium for a console, that is sold on the the premise that it is much more than a console, a total media centre.
I don't particularly buy any further hardware, to make the PS3 do what it's meant to do.My farts hospitalize small children

it shouldnt be, as its running on the internal (local) network. the router firewall only protects the network from attacks from the internet.dreamypuma wrote: »Hi, I tried this and it didn't make any difference, which makes me think it was the router firewall.
is media server connection enabled on the ps3? (settings > network > media server connection, then try selecting search for media servers under music for example)
i have also set a static IP address for my computer (and for my ps3 - you dont need to have a static IP for any of the devices but i find it easier to allocate static IPs when doing stuff like this)0
