Lycos Ceasing Webhosting

Lycos suck. I am currently in the process of moving all my stuff and a pain it has been. they never respond to e-mails, i can't get them on the phone. one of the codes they gave me didn't work. Arrrgh.
anyway things grind on. I too was having issues with webpointing not working, but once i unplugged the domain from the subdomain i was able to point it.
on the bright side my new host is much better in ever respect. I have a much better service for about 1/3 the cost. My site might actually make a profit now.0 -
I am glad to hear others are xferring elsewhere.
I have a website & subdomain with Lycos (both domain and hosting). I have another separate webhosting & domain package with Fuzioned, and have found their support excellent. They have live online support, are only a phone call away and very helpful. I intend to transfer my lycos site to fuzioned.
I am not the most technically minded so I can tell this whole process is going to be very painful. I haven't a clue what half of the codes are that I need.
Wish me luck  :rotfl:0 -
As a real non techie i need a basic question answered-
I built my website on Lycos using the Joomla application. Once I transfer my domain name elsewhere, how do I actually transfer the content to the new host?
Do I need a webhost that offers Joomla as an application as Lycos did?
ThanksWho made hogs and dogs and frogs?

My favourite host has always been hostmonster.
They have the best support and customer service i have ever seen.
Ill paste you some details.300 Gigabytes of Hosting Space - Host UNLIMITED Domains on 1 account for no extra cost - 5000 Pop/Imap Email Accounts - SSH Access (Secure Shell) - 3,000 Gigs of Transfer - SSL, FTP, Stats, CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MYSQL, Front Page Extensions, Free Domain Forever, Free Site Builder, Free Search Engine Submission
I pay around $6.95 a month which works out about four quid or so i think at the moment.
As for joomla Hostmonster have an automatic installation for joomla ans alot of other great applications you can install instantly from the controll panel.

I'm fuming!
Lycos still haven't responded to any of my emails about transferring my domain to 123-Reg.
I got an email from them about the Strato transfer process and it says:
"In cooperation with STRATO, we have implemented and optimized processes to facilitate the transfer of your domains, sub-domains and email accounts. Such a smooth transfer is only possible with the STRATO transfer service."
Now, I'm probably reading it wrong as I'm angry but it looks like "If you don't go with Strato, we'll not do anything to help you transfer elsewhere".

I've been with Lycos over 4 years and this is how good customers are treated!0 -
Oh yeah, for anyone looking for alternative hosting I went with Office Live Small Businesses....you don't have to be a business.
It's totally free...unless you want more storage, email addresses etc.
You get free reports, free email, free domain or you can redelegate your domain to them.
http://smallbusiness.officelive.com/
You can use the site designer or you can transfer your existing site content.
Anything you need help with can be found on the community support site and their email support is good too.
I've nothing but good things to say about them!0 -
I actually succeeded in getting Lycos to update my IPS tag this week :j . I emailed 2 weeks ago and got just an automated response. I had failed to get through on the phone, just repeatedly getting a recording for my 12p a minute, then finally got through on Monday. The guy I spoke too would not admit how far behind they were, but said its certainly greater than 2 weeks (implying far more). I explained I just wanted the IPS tag updated and I knew how to do the rest and he said he would dig out the email requests and attend to it that day (I think convincing him once he did it I wouldn’t call again helped). He did follow up and get the update done that day – so for the first time ever with Lycos I was happily surprised. They are basically swamped with emails and calls, be warned if you are waiting.
I am not a Lycos fan, I didn't chose them as a host I have just had to sort out frustrations every time we wanted to upgrade joomla and I had to sort out the moving off the site (for a group I do stuff with).
Note: If you are planning on not moving to STRATO remember to switch off the automatic renewal.
To the person who asked about moving your content (for joomla). Its not hard if you have some basic knowledge - you need to back up your database and also grab all your file content via FTP (this might help http://kb.siteground.com/article/How_to_migrate_my_local_Joomla_installation_to_SiteGround.html). You do not need a host that offers a standard Joomla package - you need one with the joomla pre-requisites http://help.joomla.org/content/view/1938/302/. If you have no real technical knowledge opt for someone who will move the site for you, not all will but there are some out there that will.0 -
I'm having a nightmare with this one....
I resorted to transferring the .co.uk domains via nominet. At 10+vat for all of them i was more than happy to pay. And their service was superb.
The problem is the .com domains. I have 6 of them. I've got the auth codes, and initaited the transfer. But they're not responding to the admin request email. I can't access anything on the lycos control panel any more - so can't change the admin contact.
I've no idea what to do now...
Anyone succeeded in moving a .com recently? I'm really worried...0 -
Having spent many many hours looking into this, making phone calls, and firing off emails anywhere and everywhere, this is where I've got to.....and fingers crossed it should get sorted.
This applies to .com and other 'global' domains.
As lycos are not responding to authorisation requests, any request is e xpiring before it can be actioned. In theory, if the 'losing' registrar does not respond to a request after 5 days it happens by default anyway. See Domain Transfers
BUT I'm finding that isn't the case. The transfer is being reported back by the 'gaining' registrar as failed.
Verisign are supposedly the body responsible for registrars. And registrars are supposed to be acredited by ICANN. But no one has any authority over the resellers (like lycos).
If you check out the whois database on the Verisign database, it shows you who the registrar is, and who the admin contact is. You can then look up the registrar's details via the same look-up. All mine are listed under KEY-SYSTEMS GMBH, who are an ICANN acredited registrar.
So...... If lycos aren't responding, I suggest you contact these people direct. See www.key-systems.net
I also emailed the admin contact - the owner of key-systems. I've yet to get a response, but I only sent the email a few hours ago.
It seems all gaining registrars are saying the same thing - i.e. because lycos is listed as the admin contact, there is nothing they can do. This is rubbish. Why is it rubbish?
I found this very useful statement on the ICANN website
My registrar is listed as the Administrative Contact for my domain name and this is preventing my transfer from going through. What do I do?
If you are listed as the Registrant for the domain name, you can ask your new registrar of choice to send the required Form of Authorization to you rather than the Administrative Contact.
You can also update the data associated with the domain name and name a different Administrative Contact. Some registrars offer an online interface tool for you to manage this data yourself; others can make these updates if you contact their customer service.
Here's the link to the appropriate page.
I've challenged my new provider on this - and they've been very helpful. Fingers crossed, they are now if the process of forcing this through by sending the authorisation request directly to me rather than the 'admin contact' that's listed.
So, in a nutshell.....
1. Ask your new registrar to send the Form of Authorisation to you instead of the listed admin contact
2. If that won't work, contact the ICANN acredited registrar behind lycos - should I assume they're all with KEY-SYSTEMS GMBH?
.co.uk domains.....
If you're concerned about .co.uk domains... just go straight to nominet, who will force it through anyway. If you have several domains, get them all put into the same account if they're not already. Then move them - it only costs a total of 10+vat for all the domains in one nominet account. This may be against the moneysaving principle - but when i think how much time I've lost I'm more than happy to pay it. And their service was absolutely superb.
