Needing some roof repairs-apparantly 20 roof tiles and two bits of metal for the very top. Anyone got an idea of how much this could potentially cost for a roofer to do?

  • That link seems to be for a roof that needed a substantial amount of work, i wonder what my quote from the roofer will be-eek! a couple of piddley tiles and some flashing shouldn't cost that much...i hope!

I cant believe how much they charge. Two chaps up for an hour at most to replace 6-8 slates, cost £150 two years ago. Thankfully £100 of that was on the insurance

Same as any other, get a few quotes. Most firms will charge you anything up to fifty quid just to put a ladder up these days. Also depends on the type of tiles, i.e. how much they cost? The metal I am not sure about unless you are talking about lead flashings? Possibly a little bit of pointing if that is the case as they have come off for a reason. I'll do it for fifty quid if you buy the tiles and it isn't too high. Only joking, I don't go on any roofs these days unless it is a bungalow.

  • Ok two rolls of flashing, 20 tiles, plus some repointing to brickwork on the front , think he mentioned fixing some straps and its £100 for the materials =£260 altogether which we split 6 ways because its a tenement- i think this is an ok price

Is it tiles or slate roof? The mention of straps makes me wonder as this was a way of fitting loose slates when I was in the job. Not a very satisfactory way of doing things really. If it is tiles they just hook onto wooden slats and one can be replaced in seconds. That doesn't sound a bad price for what he is supposed to be doing but is it possible to check somewhere that he has done work before?

  • Oh yep sorry its definitely an old slate roof, got his number of yell.com and as I am new to the area I kept asking my neighbours if they knew any roofers locally but they didn't! Having to take 'pot' luck and try getting quotes from a few different ones, honestly its been really hard to get hold of any other roofers!

Might be an idea to check with local trading standards. I don't think they are allowed to recommend anyone but they should be able to tell you if this guy is a baddy or not.

Some roofers are very good but there are a lot of cowboys and it is difficult to see what they are getting up to from the ground. Not much more I can say really. Best of luck with it and I hope it works out.
