Moral/Legal Q: Been repaid some money to my savings account, can I keep the interest?

I made a payment from one account to another and there was clearical error meaning someone cocked up. Eventually the payment hits the correct account but the bank make an error and the sum goes back into my original account.

now I know that if they ask for it you have to give it back and sure as eggs are eggs auditing will pick it up. However this is earning very nice interest and has been for a while. When they notice the error will they claim any interest earnt too?

Its a debt. So you are in debt to the bank. You can by all means be the good one and say but they will just say 'ok don't worry we'll pick it up soon', and it'll continue as it is.

Leave it earning interest. You have 6 years before the money is yours (I can't remember the actual legality of it, but a debt is wiped if the person you are in debt to does not make contact with you or something or rather).

Thanks for the reply. If or more likely when they spot the sum will they remove the interest aswell or can they only take the original sum out?

They won't take interest don't worry
