Coppers and small silver coins

Do any of you save your coppers and/or small change?

I save mine, nearly all the change in my purse gets thrown in. I normally end up taking the £1 coins and 50ps out for the shop, car parks etc but the rest normally stays there.

Last night i counted up £92 and paid it onto one of my CC!

I've still got a jar to work through which im hoping i can do tonight.

Very pleased with being able to pay nearly an extra £100 this month off already.

Yes, I do exactly what you do (any coins worth less than 50p are saved). I keep an eye on mine and when I have about £15 bagged up properly (about every 2-3 months) I change it with a local shop keeper then pay it off our variable mortgage... every little helps and I've found it to be a painless way of saving.

Another one here! We usually take about £80 - £90 every three months or so, to the bank and use it either as spends (naughty I know!) for the baby or pay off some of our credit card. We usually put anything less than £1 in, though we do occasionally raid it for coffee money for OH or bus fare for me. We use an old whiskey tube which lives next to the fire. Last time I tried to get it counted though, my darling daughter decided to wake up, so I had to scoop it up as quickly as poss before going to get her. What did she do though? Promptly went back to sleep for another 45 minutes!

  • We had loads of coppers hanging around all over the place for ages and I'd never got round to getting bags etc to pay them in the bank but I found out about the machines in Sainsburys that you can just tip them into and they will change them into notes etc for you. They do take a commission but it was easier for me.
  • what I do is with my online banking I have 2 accounts a normal account and a savings account. Every time I log in and view my normal account I transfer the uneven amount e.g if I had £113.25 in my account I would transfer the 3.25 to my savings.
I find this really easy to do as it doesn't effect the balance and it adds up fairly quickly

We do this too - it's amazing how quickly small change mounts up! Mind you the totals have shrunk dramatically since DS1 went off to Uni - he takes all the 20 pence pieces for the laundrette.....

Not sure if this is true, but some time ago I remember reading that saving accounts only attract interest on whole pounds. Therefore, if true, all the odd pence on savings is making money for the bank/building society, but not for saver. Just in case I usually round up saving account to a whole number just after interest has been credited. Does anyone know if this is what happens?

We save up 5,2,1p's and when we have a enough to pay in it goes in to the mortgage account to be paid off.

As we have an offset mortgage.

I know it is only a few pounds here and there. But it makes feel good.

But as we have cut right back on our spending I am finding we are getting less and less in the pot. Never mind.

I always do this, when transferring money to my savings account after it has gained some interest. I hate seeing uneven amounts!

As for saving coins, I have a 2 pint beer mug which I fill with change. When it gets full (which takes months!!!) I bag it all up and take it to the bank or use it on the Coinstar machine at Sainsburys. :)
