Advice on a new washing machine please anyone?

Hello

My seven year old Hotpoint has started to make more noise than usual recently when spinning, and has just stopped halfway through a cycle so it looks like it has had it. the clothes are sitting in soapy water. It was making noises and the drum stopped turning. It has lasted a while so I'm not that surpised.

Just would like some advice if possible a) is it probably best to just buy a new one, not even bother with a repair and b) if so any recommendations? I would probably spend £300-400, would like the most energy efficient possible for that money and probably don't need a dryer with it, but may consider this as I didn't have one before. I have just looked on the John Lewis website and it looks like I could get something decent for that price, but it is always helpful to get views from this site; ideally I would like the shop to connect it and remove the old one without too much cost.

Thanks for any help!

  • Maybe a sock stuck in the waste filter. The Gadget show last week tested several washers and the LG won.

Thanks for the quick reply. Just been researching online and on this site and decided I wouldn't get a Beko, Hotpoint or Candy.

So how would I find the sock, given that there is water in the machine? I guess somehow unscrew the waste pipe with a bucket under it?!

    thanks

If the drum doesn't rotate it is probably only the brushes worn out - lot cheaper than a new machine - get a quote.

OK thanks - also the water is not draining though - isn't this a different problem?

I wouldn't get a new machine just yet, it's quite a modern one and several fairly small things could be causing your problem. Our machine did this once because the drain trap was blocked. If it can't empty the water the programmer stops. The manual should explain how to clean the trap out. If you've never done this before then it's a likely cause.

I would go for new brushes too - drain the water from the machine, and have a local business come out to tell you what they think it might be.
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.
  • website called washerhelp has a great guide on washing machines and who makes which brand (typically only 3-4 manufacturers make most of the brands)
  • Thank you all for replying. I am surprised at the suggestions of getting it repaired - I only paid about £150 for it new (ex display so had about £100 off) and am not sure that it is worth paying someone to come out as they often charge a bomb. ?

    Thanks

thanks - it is a very helpful website; will try and get a free estimate from an engineer and have found several in my area in their Trade Association. Very helpful, thanks.:j

Just thought I'd say thanks to all for the advice - this website was very helpful and through it I found a local father and son business who came and fixed it; cost me £98 but I thought it was worth it as I'm rubbish at doing those things myself, and he said it was the carbon brushes and the bearings and should keep on going for some time once they are fixed; it is and old Hotpoint which he said are no longer made by Hotpoint but made by Indesit, and mine was one of their better ones. He showed me the carbon brushes and they were worn completely down.

I did look around, particularly Currys auction site but having taken advice from here it saved me buying new for now. I think a washing machine is definitely something which is worth spending more on, rather than just getting cheapos and constantly throwing them out and buying another cheap one a few years later. By the time you;ve paid for delivery and removal of the old one it gets quite expensive, so I probably did the right thing, thanks guys!
