Old Vulcan boiler advice

I have a very old Vulcan boiler and now the pump sticks more often resulting in a sharp hit on the side to get it going again. Because this is happening more often It has started to weep around the pipe join and rusting a bit.

I would appreciate it if anyone who knows about this kind of thing would view the links below to get an idea of what I am talking about and give me some advice. I want to avoid hitting the pump now because it won't help the leek. I did drain the radiators a couple of years ago to get rid of the brown sludge but it must have built up again hence the pump sticking.

I have been told that there is a government grant available to help with buying energy efficient boilers. This obviously isn't efficient but we are in no way able to afford a new system.

a grant from warmfront is available to those on certain benefits.
if you dont qualify, then contact your local council. most have a grant/loan scheme of some kind.
why not just replace your pump and see if it makes a difference? pumps are fairly cheap at about 35 quidish.
    Get some gorm.

Does the cover fit on the boiler in that cupboard?

    How is it serviced?

AFAIK the old boiler has to be dead to qualify for Warmfront.

If you let a decent Corgi engineer near that steel yourself for the big red sticker!
Mine needed a new fan so that must be whats wrong with yours:D

The person who changed my Gas meter a couple of years ago looked at it and checked it ok. It's doesn't get serviced. I usually replace the thermocouple every 2-3 years. Never had a cover to my knowledge. We inherited it like that when we moved in 10 years ago.

If I got the red sticker, would that qualify for "dead" and I would get the grant?
  • OMG I know this is a moneysaving board but that is just being tight!!! Replace the boiler mate its lived 15-20 years past its sell by date!!!!

If you had a decent engineer look at that he would probably disconnect it!!!!
  • Can't afford another one so will have to make do for now.

Dead right. You cannot afford not to at least pay a qualified engineer to check your boiler over. Even from the photo there are serious concerns in my mind regarding signs of corrosion, the makeshift compartment and proximity of combustibles to the boiler. Even if you have to buy some cheap convector heaters and use the immersion to get through the winter, you really need to get this boiler looked at professionally.
