Scottish Hydro Elec

Hi

I hope someone can help with advice

Received Gas and Elec bills today from Scottish Hydro Elec and I am trying to guage if these are average or accurate, have problems trying to work out exactly how the bills are laid out.

Gas 10Th Sept to 12 Dec..Total £361.63
Seem to have used 911.63 cu mts
Units converted tp kw hours 10078.57 kWh
On the bottom of bill it says I use 107.21 units/day average.

Is this normal and average,we have been making an attempt to put central heating etc off and trying to save ,but seems high ? Dont know what this 107.2 units/day means Works out at £120/month which in comparisin to other folks we have spoken to seems really high.

Elec 10Th Sept to 12 Dec. Total £245.06
Units used 1775
Works out at £81/month

Again seems excessivly high

Anyone help in explaining bills especially gas And are they high nor average.

I think the gas looks a tad high although it's about what we're using. However, that's hot water for six and CH for a three bed house and in Sept we were averaging 26kwh a day.

Your elec averages about 19 or 20 kwh a day and that's high compared to us. We averaged 13 kwh a day in the summer but that's more like 14 now.

Don't forget that for gas this is for a period during Autumn and Winter. Over this quarter I use about one third of my annual consumption - if that is any guide.

However that still means your annual consumption is well above average - I would estimate about 30,000kWh.(UK average is 20,500)

Similarly your electricity at approx 7,000kWh is double the UK average of 3,300kWh.

Not much more to say really - you have very high consumption.
  • Whoops..

3 bedroom CH in rooms no central thermostat,Hot Water through multipoint,I tend to leave pc switched on 24/7 and shower is electric...only 2 of us at home.

I do work from home but we have compared with friends in a similar size house and they seem to be half elec and gas...puzzled.

Firstly, are the meter readings actual or estimated?

If actual and only two of you, you're using a lot, especially if you think you're being careful. We have someone home most of the day too.

Does pc have to be on all the time?

Electric showers of more than a few minutes are expensive.
  • Both are estimated, but Gas is about spot on and elec is 181 out downwards.

PC is a habit I usually run overnight and its never really switched off...my son who has left home now had a pet kept in a heated tank thingy..with main heat lamp on all
the time over this period until recently. Our gas CH we have 3 rooms empty...with kiddies now left home but someone said that its better and just as cheap to keep CH on low in each room rather than turn off completely.

Not sure but to me, it seems sensible to turn off radiators in unused rooms or turn them down as low as they'll go and keep the doors closed. I don't think that would account for your high gas use though - we are high users because we like the house warm and, of course, there's all that hot water for six of us.

As for electricity, do you have loads of halogen spotlights, big freezers or something else that racks up the kwh? May be worth taking some daily meter readings and working out what it is.

If they are set low enough that the radiators don't get warm, then they are effectively turned off.

However any heat produced by the radiator will have used gas to produce that heat.
  • You have to turn off the rads & shut the doors of unused rooms. If you heat the rooms at all... even passively... then you've paid gas for that privilege.
