Received my BT bill this week and can't see where my money is going as i don't think i use the phone much at all. Anyway i have read Martin's articles and read a few threads. Could some of you kind people tell me if i am along the right lines please?
BTW i am on BT option 1,
As i understand it i need to stay on BT option 1 (£10.50 line rental p.m), then register with justdialsaver to use evening & weekend (free calls) but use call1899 for any mobile calls that i need to make day & evening. If i need to make 0870 calls then i should check to see if i can get a landline number first (saynoto0870), then if not then i should just dial using BT. Is all this right?
What's the cheapest way to do 0845 calls please?
Can i cheapen my redirection calls? this is when people call my home number but i have set up a redirection so the call comes through to my mobile while i am out.
Thanks
Zziggi
P.S. is there anyway i can get caller ID cheaper than I am paying for this extra service from BT? I thought i saw an advert on TV recently saying you could request this from BT.
BTW i am on BT option 1,
-
mainly dial in the evenings national & local numbers. (30-60 min calls)
-
never-ever dial internationally.
-
Occasional short mobile calls (day & evening, 2-3mins MAX)
-
daytime mobile calls are usually redirection calls when people dial my home tel. no. and i am out and don't want to miss the call. i always keep the calls as brief as poss (i don't want to pass out my mobile number to all these people either to call me direct).
-
day calls are usually short-ish local calls, 0845 or if i must, 0870.
-
I'd class us as a low frequency users - we let other call us

BT Together Option 1 is now £11/month if you pay by DD.
Because of recent adverse reports on MSE about JustDial's customer services, I'd choose Primus Saver Option 2 instead as my CPS (for free evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls).
I'd also register with call1899.co.uk and use that prefix for weekday daytime UK 01/02 calls (3p connection and 0p/minute).
I'd use 18185.co.uk for those calls to mobiles (4p connection and 5p/minute during the week and 2p/minute at weekends). I believe they're also cheaper than BT for weekday daytime calls to 0870 numbers.
BT appear to be cheapest for 0845 calls (so use the 1280 prefix to revert to BT from your CPS)
If you dial 0800 916 55 44 and follow the voice prompts, that will put you onto BT's free BT Privacy Caller Display and automatically cancel your paid-for version.
Call forwarding is always going to be expensive. Why not get a cheap PAYG mobile and leave a mesage on an anwerphone for people to call you if urgent. That way your 'normal' mobile number doesn't have to be divulgedTime has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
To cut your diverted mobile call cost register it as your best friend,on BT F&F. Consider getting BT Call Mobile normally £1.50p a month but free for 3 months, which will give you a further discount on top of F&F one.In total a 40% discount off your diverted mobile call charges.PF.0

Your call usage sounds pretty much identical to mine ( apart from the mobiles ).
I swapped to the BT Option 1 as they wrote to me and said I wasnt benefitting from Option 2. But when I got my bill this month, I realised that every time I call someone with a 1571 answer machine, I am being charged 3p a time to listen to the voice message. I had no idea this happened, and had quite a few occasions listed on there !!! I will look in to getting free calls from other providers like mentioned above. But I am moving in the next few weeks, so I dont want to start registering things to the number I am on now, as it will change !!!
Also, we have caller ID. I subscribed to it online for free. I think they call it BT Privacy !!!0
