There is something quite not right about this.

It could be compared to forcing your sister into prostitution and keeping all her earnings yourself?

There is really something dreadful about using your child to make money for your own benefit. It's fair enough if it's invested for a child's future - but making a toddler work just because you can't be bothered to find a job is absolutely disgraceful.

Oh yeah, I totally agree, jesus imagine doing something as terrible as letting your childs photo be taken in order for you to pay the mortgage!

Shouldn't you pay the mortgage yourself rather than making your child work?

    I thought this was 2009, not 1809.

I agree there simply is something wrong about the whole thing, I'm not happy about using kids as another 'income stream' .

Well there's the solution to the UK recession.

Re-open mines and send all toddlers down to pay for your mortgage.

Something that no one has mentioned (I don't think) but I think is the most important point-

Do you think it is a good idea to have a child at such a young age (or arguably at any age) learning that his/her image, beauty, attractiveness & looks are so important, important enough to be earning money?

Despite a parents best intentions these type of experiences may well lead a child to place a disproportionate amount of importance upon their looks and physical attractiveness as what makes them an important/good/loveable or worthy person. Not because anyone consciously tells them this but because it is what the experiences dictate.

The media and discourses of how we should all look in order to be good/famous/successful are hard enough to counter without directly placing a child in a position which is all about how they look.

I would be extremely wary of this type of experience. My Dh and I both work in educational & child psychlogy so know the research and see the consequences.

Don't mean to offend, but I would say that your childs future emotional, social and psychological well being are far more important than money. And yes, I'm sure many kids seemingly enjoy modelling experiences and there may be apparent gains to their confidence etc but unfortunately we cant always see what effect these things are having on their development of an identity, self esteem and these issues often don't surface until long into the future.

I have to stick in my oar here to sort of defend the industry.

Most child modeling in the UK isn't really about looks or beauty or attractiveness. It's only when you start to hit the later teenage years that the fashion industry starts to put value on looks and figure.

For most ad campaigns / catalogues it doesn't matter what the toddler looks like. They all look the same at that age anyway.
