i would go for apple every time, used p.c. and apple for many years, depends on what you want it for. apples are far easier to use and dont crash and no viruses!0

Theres a new apple laptop coming out soon with an "intel" cpu which will make it about 3x quicker than the current ones. Hang on checking the website
Its called the Macbook Pro and its available to buy now!!
Here's some text from the webpage
MacBook Pro is the first Mac notebook built upon the revolutionary new Intel Core Duo. It’s actually two processors built into a single chip — which makes this by far the biggest leap in mobile Mac power you’ve ever seen.
They quote a 4x speed increase over previous laptops.
Basic model is 1429quid inc. VAT
Nice looking but expensive.
Apple laptops are regarded as easier to use though don't have the flexibility of the normal laptop. If you buy a non-apple laptop I would expect more tech headaches unless you're a tech guru and don't mind handling these problems. The PC equiv. of this MacBook Pro would be I suppose one of the more expensive Sony Vaio models.
Anyhow hope this helps

As no-one has given you a list of pro's and con's here goes.

They dont actually mention the cost and wait of repairs though.
Also spares for a windows based PC are easier to find and are cheaper.0 -
I would think you need to look carefully at what you are going to use it for. I have used both on many occasions. I love the mac but I also love to play games and the choice of gaming software for the mac is frankly pants.
If you are a gamer I'd say go for Windows, however if you are video editing/surfing/working i'd go for the mac every time.0 -
thankyou for that linkits very helpful.
i would be using it to play Football manager on and thats the only game i play.
i would be listening to music and surfing the web other times andjust doin other bits and bobs.
i am thinking i might buy one and keep my current laptop aswell just to see which one is better for me then can lend my girfriend the other one.0 -
Would you consider a desktop?
Easier to upgrade, you wont need a cooling pad, laptop keyboards can be a pain
as in uncomfortable. And are cheaper that any laptop.0 -
well i have got a desktop computer at my mum and dads house which i gave them forwhen i come at the weekends.
and have been using my laptop for a while now and dont find it that uncomfortable.
i have already got a cooling pad for my laptop so i am all set up for one.
i have also been looking at the sony viao laptops for when i want to upgrade.
the laptop i have at the minute ainttoo bad its a 2.8ghz 60gb hdd and got 1.2gb RAM0 -
I would agree with intel on the repair side of things with the apple. The Gadget Show a few months ago dropped an Imac and PC from a 2nd floor balcony and found that the PC was far cheaper and faster to repair (100quid and a few days I think) whereas the Imac was far dearer and took longer (500quid plus a few weeks I think).
I would by a Vaio for yourself and give the compaq to your gf. Both would be compatable then wouldn't they.
Jules
PS Intel usually knows what he's talking about.
PPS I have been told not to bother with the Celeron laptops go for the Pentium Mobile ones (better on the batteries). If you want a place to start looking look at the Acer pentium m laptops at ebuyer.Grocery Challenge 2008

£1400+ is an awful lot to be spending on a computer for the little that you will be using it for. Have you checked that the game that you want on a mac? I belive those new mac's need something called a rosetta program if you are using old mac programs or a new universal program. You can get pc's that are very small - dell has one that takes up about a quarter of the size of a normal one with crt monitor.0
