Travel Insurance-Holiday cut short

My parents are on holiday in Tenerife and are now going to have to return home a week early due to my nan (mum's mum) having died yesterday.
My nan had been in good health and had died of a heart attack, therefore this could not be classed as a forseeable event.
Would they be likely to be able to make a claim on their insurance?
I don't know anything about what type of insurance they have as they obviously have all of the documents with them, but any advice on the general rule would be much appriciated.
They are not going to be in any condition to sort this out when they return and I have never had any dealings with travel insurance before, so any help would be great.
Thanks

Sorry to hear about your Nan, I think the best thing to do is call the insurance company if the documents don't specifically say what is covered.0

Thanks for your reply nearlyrich, I was not sure if there was any set rulings on this type of event. I will get hold of the documents when they get back and check the small print.

They almost certainly need to take some action before they return.
They need to look at their policy document and read the details under the "curtailment" section and they will quite probably have to contact the insurance company's emergency team before returning if they are likely to be able to claim anything. As to what they can claim depends on the policy, it may only be the costs to return.
Here is typical of wording they often include:
You are not covered for a claim for curtailment which has not been approved by the relevant Assitance Services PRovider PRIOR to your return to the UK.0 -
Thanks Lorian,
I think I will go into the travel agents where they booked the holiday and see if I can get any help from them as I think that the insurance was part of the 'all in' package, hopefully they will not quote the 'data protection act' if we can work on an 'in theory' basis.
Mum and dad should be phoning tomorrow to let us know when they can get home, which is obviously their first priority, hopefully I will then have the information to pass on to them before they leave.
