mp3 player problem

I have just been given a mp3 player. I have never used one, and want to transfer music I have on my laptop, onto the mp3. My playlists are in audio CD format.
I tried drag and drop but as they are audio cd format they wouldn't play.
I then changed to Data CD format, it then transferred automatically to the mp3 player and will play but I have a lot of mushy background noise when I play the tracks.
As you can tell, I am not very techie minded
, can anyone help please?

I did it exactly the same as i did last time, in media player, and it worked this time, so what I did wrong before, I don't know.
Thankyou for your kind advice, greatly appreciated.I wish you......
