Shelves over the radiators will also help push the warmth into the room rather than it going up and out the window. The foil idea is a very good one but what I would do is buy a roll of the polystyrene lining and stick the foil to that and then push it behind the radiator and fix it into place, that will give extra insulation where you need it most.

Heavy lined curtains over the windows will also help and check there are no gaps around the edges of the window, it can be hard to spot these but try holding a candle around the edges and see if the flame wavers around at all.

my front room is a similar size to yours (15 ft x 15 ft) it takes a good 3 or 4 hours for the radiators to heat the room up - i've got a coal fire and that is a lot quicker - but a bit messier. i also try to make sure there is no furniture in front of the radiator.

I used to have a similar sized room and in winter we used to just move the comfy chairs next to the radiator. We also had a gas fire fitted and that helped.

You might want to check out whether you qualify for the Warm front grants.

If that URL is too long just Google on Energy efficiency grant. They do cavity wall insulation and roof lagging for example, if yours isn't up to current standards.

I still work but am told I qualify and am waiting for the surveyor to call.

I always tuck my curtains behind my radiator as soon as it gets dark, i also make sure the living room door stays shut and in the evenings, i often turn the lights out and use some candles, i dont know why but it always makes the room feel much warmer than when i have the overhead light on!!!

I got some excellent rad foil from a seller on ebay. There were 8 sheets in the pack and the design is patented. The foil is ridged with air spaces behing acting as insulation. It was very easy to fit using a cane. Also rad shelves will throw the heat out into the room

A long time ago in my previous house before I had double glazing, I put cling film on all the windows and shrunk it with a hair dryer. That was also effective
  • Im very interested in this thread. Downstairs, I only have a lounge, kitchen and loo. Both rooms are arched..so no doors and gets very cold. There is a rad in the lounge, hallway and toilet but are quite wide open areas and think the rad in lounge should be bigger. We have a gas fire in lounge which is rarely put on and our GCH is set at 19c and is always baking upstairs-but there are doors.

We've just had cavity wall insulation. It cost us £110 but I think that price is subsidised by your electricity/gas provider. Can't believe the difference it's made, especially in DS's bedroom which used to be like walking into the arctic and now it's the same temp as the rest of the house. We also had the fireplace properly blanked off in the living room because the chimney was drawing lots of cold air into the room and that's made a big difference as well. Obviously you'd have to seek proper advice before blocking any chimneys up.

Check and see if the radiators inlet valves are fully open and also the outlets.
