18866 problems

I'm unsure if this is the right place to post this but i'm sure it'll be moved if i'm wrong.

I signed up to 18866 about 1 month ago when i changed from dial up to broadband.

For about a week it worked fine. Then one day out of the blue i realised on occassions when i dialled out, i couldn't get through, i'd experience an intermittant dialling tone (similar to engaged).

Then a few days later i couldn't use my phone at all, even when i dropped the 18866 and tried to use BT. This tone is always there, subsequently i can't make any external calls.

However, I can receive incoming calls, I can dial 1471 and get the operator. So my line isn't faulty.

I have sent 18866 4 msgs, one a query, one a complaint and 2 as registered faults. Yet on the 1 occasion when i have received a reply from them, i was told that this might be an intermittant problem that should resolve itself shortly.

I think not, 3 weeks later, i can't use my phone. However i can't phone them to tell them that and they are ignoring me online. I sent them another fault complaint yesterday and heard nothing. Do they care i can't use my phone?

My mum has raved about them and never had any problems.

What can i do? I'm incurring mobile charges as i obviously have to make some necessary calls, but i'm trying to keep them to a minimum.

My phone isn't a happy bunny and nor am I!

Please someone help me to get 18866 to sort me out......please ???

  • I don't see how 18866 can be to blame for you not being able to dial out via BT. Have you had BT check your line? That would seem to be where the fault lies as your calls only go through 18866 when you dial that number first so if you can't make calls without the CPS number the fault must lie with your line. IMO only :D
  • I agree, this is nothing to do with 18866.
    You have a line fault.
  • Could it be anything to do with your broadband? Do you have your filters in the right order? Sorry if you have, just a thought :)
  • Yes i do have my filters right thanks, i got a friend to check for me. I guess i need to get back to BT then?

Thanks for that, i'll let you know what they say.
  • Be warned that BT will tell you that if the problem is in any way your fault that they will charge you for coming out. So do ask them what checks you can do yourself incase it is your problem. Do you have Sky perhaps because you need a filter on that socket too? I ask this as someone on the telephone board was having problems and it turned out to be the Sky socket.

try swapping the upstairs and downstairs phones to see if it's a problem with the sockets.

    then if no joy...

if both phones have a detatchable lead that connects to the phone socket (detachable at the phone end) then swap them around too.

if still no joy sounds like you have a knackered NTL phone. they are cheapo anyway so no real surprises (sorry to say)
