It might be the screensaver? I have come across a couple of screen savers that are non standard windows, and they keep the laptop 'active' so it never thinks it's idle and thus stops it going to sleep?

Have given up trying to resolve. Now just using the power off button set to hibernate (i.e forcing it to go to sleep). So basically I have a 1 key solution, which even I can put up with.
Would like to have solved problem though, as obviously something is wrong.
