Whats the cheapest way of insuring new young driver

My daughter has just passed her driving test this week and is 18 at the end of the month.

If she has insurance in her name and to build up her own no claims bonus, the insurance will cost approx £950 for the first year and that is based on her not getting the car until she is 18.

I have read that some insurance companies let you insure two cars which if it was possible would work out right as my car insurance is due to be renewed on 1st Feb. I also have 11 years no claims bonus.

Any advice would be appreciated

    Have to agree with gizmoleeds.

£950 is reaaly good for a new driver - it helps of course that she is female. Has she done Pass Plus - I found that this reduced the premium as it gave a discount with some insurers. My son was a month short of his 18th birthday when I took the plunge to get him on his own insurance. It was just over £1600 with Norwich Union. He is now in his 2nd year and it dropped to just over £800.

It's a lot of money to begin with but the sad fact is that you might pay a reduced amount having her as a named driver but it will still be expensive when you eventually decide to get her on her own policy as anybody under 25 is always dear. There is also the problem of you being main driver on two policies if you take out a 2nd car policy so you may still have to appoint her as main driver anyway.

I've based the quote on the pass plus.

when my elder daughter passed her test 3 years ago , her insurance was in her own name and now she has 3 years no claims this year

I don't know anyone who has insured in their own name at 18 for less than £1500-ish. Sign on the dotted line - quick. :D

Need to get the vehicle first - just done the quote based on the one she wants out of autotrader.

Wish I could get it for £950. DS3 will be 17 this year and has been shopping around. £2,500 - £5000. Yes, the wonders of car insurance in Northern Ireland.
  • Did I hear in the news this week that Direct Line are taking into account being a named driver for a few years when giving a new quote in their own name?

I've never done a like before:-

    Hi,
I found Quinn Direct cheapest for my 2nd year of insurance on my name (on a different car) as well as £135 compulsory insurance, no voluntary insurance :j

I found cheapest when I did a "theoretical search".

    I recommend:

    1. Checkout https://www.confused.com
    2. Checkout https://www.insure-supermarket.com
    3. Checkout Quinn Direct (including in Confused.com)
    4. Checkout Bell.co.uk (included in both me thinks)

Hopefully one of these options will reduce her insurance!

    try https://www.easymoney.com

I'm a new driver, 23 with passplus. And they are quoting me £600.

    Comprehensive.
    £100 voluntary excess
£200 young driver excess (same as the other 40 insurers I checked!)

    Today:

got £481 with screentrade/NGI. Fully comp, total excess £250.

please dont put your daughter as a named driver if the car is going to be hers - its illegal for a start - its called fronting and insurance companies are starting to take a very strict view on this if the young driver has an accident and its found out about the fronting - then the insurance company can refuse to indemnify you. i know a lot of people do it but really they are clamping down. also if you daughter doesn't start now with her own insurance - its difficult to make the break in the future - she'll have got used to having it so cheap. also if she were to have an accident - its your no claims shes ruining. seriously - £950 is really good - sufffer it for one year it should come down a lot next year. also if you do put it in her own name -try adding yourself as a named driver - sometimes having an "older" woman on a policy reduces it slightly. and i really hope your getting her a little run about for now - because most people have their first little accidents when they first start driving (i know i did!)

Sounds good to me - the advantage is she can build up her own no claims - 30% in the 1st year.
