Fraud on my account

Hiya
Sorry I dont know if this is the right place to post, but hopefully some one can help?
Yesterday when I checked my bank account I had £135 less than I expected.. They couldnt tell me anything yesterday but now today they are saying its a PayPal Online transaction & I have to report it as fraud.
I have obviously cancelled my card & Halifax have said they will report it to their fraud department, but have advised it can take weeks to sort out.
The problem I have is that I now am over drawn and have NO available funds. They have said they may be able to give me a temporary overdraft but they are not sure. and I have contacted paypal but because I dont have a paypal account they are struggling to find my details.
Does anyone have any advice on what to say to Halifax in order to get this sped up?? Or what my rights are regading the fact I now have no funds etc?
Any help at all would be really really greatfully recieved!!

I don't know about the legal side of things, but I think I'd go to the branch and speak to someone in person. Explain to them how it's left you in extreme financial difficulties, and hope they will start the ball rolling to get something done?
When our account was compromised, talking to operatives on the phone was useless - visiting the branch at least gives you a name and a person to work with.
Good luck - it's horrible for this to happen at any time, but this time of year it's worse.:j Almost 2 stones gone! :j

How was the money taken?
Normally PayPal direct debit you bank account in which case you are entitled to an immediate refund by your bank.
If it was charged to your (debit) card then, as I understand it, you can still insist the bank reclaim it as a non authorised purchase. They may well try to tell you this only applies to credit cards but this is not true. I can be done with some debit cards as well.
Although I've not had any problems, PayPal have a terrible reputation. I would try to get to see a more senior persion in your bank branch ASAP.0 -
I thought for amounts of less than £300 Halifax had an immediate reimbursement policy.
Ask the branch about this.0 -
If it was a direct debit, then you should immediatly be refunded under the direct debit scheme and the bank should deal with it.
If it was under your debit card then it is either a mis-post or fraud. Either way Halifax have a process for this which requires the retailer/provider (paypal in this case) to provide evidence of the transaction. This can take upto 30 days as it has to go through a number hoops to get to paypal.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I went thru this problem with halifax and a debit card , they mucked me around for over 6 wks not knowing if it was fraud or a mistake,
eventualy i contacted "link" , who handle transactions on cards , and it was returned overnight
halifax will muck you about , and deny knolage of a guarentee on debit cards0 -

If there is fraud on an account it doesn't matter how the money was taken, or whether there is a debit or credit card. The difference between debit and credit cards is if you pay for something over £100 and it doesn't arrive, you then get more protection on a credit card. But fraud is totally different.opinions4u wrote: »I thought for amounts of less than £300 Halifax had an immediate reimbursement policy.
Ask the branch about this.
Yes, that is correct. Unless you have been negligent in any way (e.g. lent anyone your card or PIN), you should be able to get an immediate refund from a branch as it is <£300. It may complicate things that the fraud has already been reported, but go in and speak to them. As it's such a small amount (for them, I realise it's a lot to you!), they should be able to sort something out!0 -

Link run the national ATM network ... I doubt they'd be able to do anything about a debit card dispute.0 -
