Any way of finding out if a website is dodgy?

My husband made a purchase via a website a week ago. It was a UK registered site and appeared to be based in UK.
We didn't receive an email of confirmation as we expected, checked the site today, but its down. On checking the account, the money was taken out from a reference that looks like it is a US company (based in Las Vegas).
How can we find out if the website is a scam site? Any ideas?

By saying "UK registered site", I assume that you say that as it has a .co.uk address? Be aware that you can set up a website, in general, with whatever format you like! As such, a .co.uk website may not actually be hosted or run from the UK.
To find out, enter the URL in the earch box at http://www.allwhois.com/ (that site will only give you 3 searches a day for free, so make sure you get them right!)
If the returned details aren't what you would expect to see - the company name / details don't seem to match, then I suggest that you contact your bank for advice without delay.
You did use a credit card (not debit) right??0 -
Can you post the website link on here?My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.0
