Sound problems on DVD player

Hopefully this will be something obvious to someone. I have purchased a hard drive recorder and have connected it up with my normal DVD player and TV etc. The DVD player works fine if I connect it to the TV only. However, after connecting the hard drive recorder, the sound is not right on my DVD. I get the picture and the music soundtrack but not the speach from the actors.
Can anyone help?
