Dairy free porridge

I make my porridge the old fashioned way with pinhead oatmeal (not oatflakes:eek:) and just water. Soak the oatmeal overnight in cold water and then just add a wee bit more water in the morning before you bring it to the boil and then let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
Both DH and I take soya milk and we've tried many a variety. Prefer Soya So Good out of the chiller cabinet for tea/coffee and cereals, including porridge. Alpro curdles when you add it to coffee and I find it tastes chalky. When I'm cooking, I'll use the UHT supermarket soya and it tastes fine in white sauces etc.
You might have to try a few varieties before you find one you like, but persevere, there will be one out there for you!0 -
Well, I had my first bowl of porridge made with half water half Sainsbury's sweetened soya milk from the chiller and.... I was very disappointed. It had a chalkiness to it and I couldn't eat t0

Seriously - make your porridge with water, it tastes lovely when it's made that way
Then add your soya milk afterwards, if you feel it needs "milk"0 -
I always use water to make my porridge (half a cup of oats to one and a quarter cups of water pinged for a minute, stirred and then pinged for another minute - need to keep watching it as it sometimes does a very good imitation of a volcano in the microwave!) and sprinkle one or two teaspoons of demerara sugar on top - allow it to melt BEFORE stirring in for a delicious caramel flavour

I make porridge with waterquite thick, then add a splash of rice milk to thin it and cool it, along with sugar or honey.
I dont like it made with soya milk at all."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0 -
whats all this sweet porridge talk?
made with water and seasoned with salt!0 -
I make mine with rice milk. I have tried it with water - it needs to be filtered - but find that with oats it goes too gluey. It probably works better with oatmeal.
I also use a mixture of different flakes - oat, barley, wheat, quinoa, millet (same as I use to make my muesli base), as this gives me some variety in my diet. And sorry, custardy, although I don't add sugar, I don't do salt in my porridge either - I add fruit, either stewed (plums, apricots, apple) or fresh (banana, blueberries, mango, peaches) depending on the season, and maybe some linseeds, sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds.0 -

Try a different soya milk, I can't bear sweetened soya it tastes horrible (after all milk isn't sweetened), I also find the "calcium enriched" versions taste chalky and nasty.
Persevere, you'll get there. I forgot to say I add a handful of sultanas to mine whether I make it with water or soya/water.Piglet
