You sound just like my elder son :D

He's loving the fact he will come out of the Army with training for a choice of jobs -- not least HGV driving. He's thinks is fantastic that they've paid for him to learn to drive a car and HGVs -- he passed both in the space of a couple of months, and wasn't even 19. On 'civvy street' he wouldn't be allowed to drive an HGV until he's 21, so he thinks the fact he'll come out at 22 with over 3 years experience at it is a great bonus.

I hope he's not daft enough to come out at 22. The grass isn't any greener and he'll regret it. I'd at least ride out the current economic crisis before thinking about coming out.

As for his 3 years HGV driving experience, it'll count for nothing I'm afraid. Driving for the forces is completely different to commercial driving and most army HGV drivers are quite poor, especially at reversing, due to the fact they're helped with everything and don't have the restrictions civilian HGV drivers have.

He's currently determined he doesn't want to stay in any longer than that......

Whilst he'd always considered joining up, it became a toss-up between that or DSS hostels and benefits for the rest of his life. This is the kid who wouldn't knuckle down to anything or show anyone at home -- or anywhere else -- any respect, so he got shown the door! TBH, if he manages to keep his nose clean and stay in until he's 22, then it'll prove without a shadow of a doubt just how much he's changed since Dec 2005. But yes, if the economy is still like it is now then I'll be trying to persuade him to sign on for whatever the shortest service extension is......

I'm afraid you're unlikely to get into the prison service/police at 17/18 as they prefer people with more life experience. Will you have finished the public services course (one or two year?) and do you have lots of useful experience?

With regard to joining the police -- I have a couple of friends have done that (albeit 5 and 10 years ago), but it didn't look promising if they applied to go straight in 'from nowhere'.

So they took other jobs and joined the Special Constabulary (do they still exist?) alongside their 9-5 occupations, and having done a few years with them they then applied for the Police Force -- and got in without much hassle, probably due to the experience from the Specials.
