Wireless dongle thingie info required please!

I've got a Netgear router and use a usb stick to receive broadband on a pc in a different room and a built in one on a laptop.

I'm giving our daughter my old pc for christmas (cheapskate parents!) and will need to buy another usb thingie for that one too.

A couple of quick questions - is there a limit to the amount of computers that you can have running through one router at the same time?

Does it slow down everyone's connection?

Do I need to get a specific netgear one, the one I have now is a wg111t.

any help gratefully received, thanks

Does it slow down everyone's connection? As you're sharing a finite bandwidth, then you probably will notice a difference in speed of connection if more than one of you are online at once, especially if one of you is downloading streamed video and suchlike

    any help gratefully received, thanks

btw, when you say your old pc, how old ?? as long as running windows98SE or higher it'll be suitable for wi-fi

    Problem part 2 !

Having set up old machine I have discovered it is a Windows ME machine and not XP as mysteriously imagined by yours truly.

This meant it wouldn't find the wg111t dongle when I plugged it in.

I have overcome that one by downloading the driver onto a stick and now all seems well except .....

    I can't access the internet.

I can get my emails, update my anti-virus software, but when I go to the internet I get

    Forbidden

You were denied access because: Access denied by access control list.

    Any ideas, please?

I take it the old computer used to be able to access the internet OK before?

Log into the Netgear router. Go to the Firewall Settings menu and make sure that there's no rules in the outbound section.

Next go to the Schedule menu. Make sure every day is ticked and All Day under time of day.
  • Have a look at this MS KB article.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316699
Think it is referring to Tools->Internet Options->Connections in IE

Also read somewhere that under "Lan Settings" (in Connections above), make sure that there is not a tick against "Use a proxy server"

    Hope that helps.
