Halifax One Card DD Query

Hello,

I set up a DD online to pay the entire outstanding balance on my Halifax One Card sometime between middle and end of November. They wrote to me confirming this late November - I went away the first week in December, and definitely had written confirmation by then.

My statement balance is payable by 19th December - today - however, as of now nothing is showing on the Halifax website, nor has the money been taken from my bank. Last payment date on Halifax is showing as 12th November.

Something that is concerning me is that I set up a DD on my BOS card (bear in mind, same website) on the same day as setting up the Halifax one, and it is showing on the recent transactions screen as "next direct debit date", and "next direct debit amount" - but there's nothing like that for the Halifax card.

I am worried that the DD has not been taken, and I am going to make a late payment (I'm a late/missed payment virgin :o I try to be good) when I panic more tomorrow morning! Can anyone else out there with a Halifax credit card tell me whether I am worrying for nothing?

I'm beginning to wish I'd just continued paying manually... Or that I'd checked this out before it would have been too late to make a payment manually!

Thanks in advance for any help you lovely people are able to offer me!

  • There is nearly always a statement's delay before the DD kicks in. Look at your statement: unless there is a specific message saying something like the Balance of £x will be taken by direct debit on xx December, then you need to make a manual payment. Next month's statement should contain such a message which means the DD is active.

A statement with a payment dae of today wiil have been issued in late November so I suspect your DD was set up too late for this payment.

  • It said the DD would take 10 working days to set up - which left more than enough time to pay by the due date. If I remember correctly, I set up the DD shortly after receiving the statement - mainly because it said on the statement that I could now set up a DD online! (I'd been too lazy to call them, previously)

Thank you for talking to me :)

You'll need to pay this one manually and it will kick in for your January payment.

This nearly happened to me, luckily I phoned them 3 days before the payment was due to check my DD was set up they said 'yes it is set up but it won't start til next month'

If a DD is scheduled on your Hfax card it will appear in the blue box at the top of your credit card online banking page. It will tell you the date and the amount. If that is not there, no DD will be taken.

The first DD can be such a pain. Similar thing happened with me and Cap One last year when I took out their cashback card. In the first month I spent something like £1700 on it but when DD day arrived nothing seemed to have happened. I panicked and fired off a payment to them.

Couple of days later the DD showed up on my bank and Cap One accounts, alongside my manual payment!

Best bet is to call them now, I'm afraid. Despite what is said on statements and web pages, I wouldn't trust them at all.
  • Thanks for your replies folks!

I phoned Halifax, told them their website is misleading people by saying "It takes up to 10 working days to set up a DD, pay any statements that are due in this window manually", when they actually mean the DD will not be active til the next statement.

They told me to make a payment by debit card today, and they'll reverse any charges and interest, and ensure this doesn't go on my credit record.
