PC died overnight

Last night I turned my PC off as normal. This morning I went to turn it on and nothing. I've unplugged it and plugged it back in again. On the back of the base unit, just below the power cable a green light remains on, suggesting that there is power there. However, nothing happens when I turn the PC on. The base unit is just over a year old. Can anyone suggest what this might be?

It would be of real help if you could tell readers what make
and model PC you have. Or if it was homebuilt, etc.
It appears as if your power-supply is functioning, though.
Have you opened up the case and checked if there are any
LEDs lit on the motherboard?

If it really is completely dead - i.e. no fans, beeps or any other noises - there's a good possibility that the power supply has died.
Though the green LED might seem to disprove that, each power supply has several different outputs and if any one has failed they usually won't power anything up.
Most other types of failure will allow the PC to start up briefly, and then fail at POST testing stage - which you don't seem to be seeing.0 -
I am sorry your pc died overnight, was it sudden or a long illness?
Will you cremate it or bury it? What ever you choose I hope it RIP and you may meet it one day in heaven
sorry couldn't resist the pun 0 -
It's an HP base unit. It was purchased from Comet last year. I've taken off the side panel and there is nothing going on inside, no fans or lights.
If it is the power supply, is it a case of just buying another? If so, is this expensive?
Thanks for your help.Antispam wrote:I am sorry your pc died overnight, was it sudden or a long illness? Sudden

Certainly sounds like a PSU to me anyways.:idea:0

PSU mostly but the green light is a mystery, is this from the motherboard area ? Cost £30 - don't buy anything cheaper. Try reseating all the power leads inside the pc case first. Remove the 4 screws and take it to Maplins for a replacement.0

Thanks for your help.
Do you know anyone who can use a multimeter to check your
PC's power supply? This would/could save you a lot of time
and possibly money if you did.
Did you get any warranty/extended warranty that is still valid for this PC?
Power supplies are pretty robust and should last at for many years.
I am not sure if your model comes with a proprietary HP power supply
or a just a standard ATX p/s.
Put your model number, etc, into the HP part's Search and see what comes back from it: http://welcome.hp.com/gms/uk/en/sz4/printer-computer-accessories.html
Don't know what HP will charge, or even if you have to fit an HP p/s.
on the model you have.
****
If it is a standard power supply in your PC then read what the Wattage is
on the one you have and get a new one that matches or slightly exceeds it.
I reckon you should budget £35 to £50 for a decent make like Antec.
You may find however that having fitted a new p/s, your PC still does
not work, because it wasn't a failed p/s, but the mother board. Then what,
do you feel you'd be able to change the m/b?
Anyhow, see how you go.
Good look,

If it turns out it is the PSU, I managed to get a well priced PSU quickly from Maplans. I think I paid £26 for it.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Just as you all suggested it was the PSU. I bought a new one for £30 so not too bad. Thanks for your help
