Need one more digital channel

Hope this is not in the wrong place to post this. Some of the programmes I would like to watch are on a channel not available on Freeview. It is called Living. I don't want to subscribe to Sky or anything similar as I would not be interested in a lot of the programmes. Is there any way I could get just one extra channel or is this a daft question?

The other thing is that I have a small wall mounted TV which was bought only because it allowed me to view one prog and tape another at the same time. Since we started turning all the standbys off to save energy a few months ago I can no longer tape a different programme. It will only record what is being watched. (The standby has been switched back on according to suppliers recommendation!). Would you think this is easily fixable or would you buy a better TV? Trouble is, I don't like the flat black things.

First question - answer is no I'm afraid.

Second point - I really wouldn't worry about leaving one device on standby, especially if doing so stops functionality of the device.

Thank you Robt. I had thought that there was some way that I could get some extra channels without using Sky. I do now leave that one TV on standby but believe it was because I turned it off completely that this problem occurred. I will have a look at the troubleshooting page or get a new TV.

You can get Living by subscribing to Topup TV, this is a terrestrial service like freeview. You would need a Freeview box with a card slot to receive it.

PS Modern TVs (the flat black ones!!) consume next to nothing on standby, don't believe the hype spread by ecomentalists.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

An "old fashioned CRT" (like mine) TV doesn't use much in standby either.

One of the (mathematically challenged!) arguments of the "green" lobby against use of standby was based on this sort of logic:-

You have a TV that uses 150W when "on" and 5W in "standby".
If you watch 2 hrs TV a day and leave the TV in "standby" for the rest of the time your power consumption is:-
    On - 2 hrs X 150W = 300W
    Stby - 22 hrs X 5W = 110W

Therefore that TV uses 110/300 X 100 = 36.66% of "normal" power when in "standby". This is how you see figures quoted of TVs using 50% in standby.

Of course if you leave the TV on 24hrs a day its standby comsumption is 0% - much better for the environment !
