If you get caught pubs/clubs are quite within their legal rights to throw you out and/or bar you.

I just wonder what would happen if all pub/clubgoers did this. I would guess many pubs/clubs would go out of business. Moneysaving -yes, practical - no.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

    Don't bother.

    They will either:
    1. Confiscate the liquid and hip flask
    2. Throw you out of the pub/bar
    3. Do both

The only thing you can do is drink a bit before you go out. I use to go around to friends' houses and do this before we went straight to a club.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

used to do it all the time in my student days, but I never had anything so classy as a hipflask, small coke bottle all the way! :D

I just used to make sure I was discrete, I most often used to buy a single and then top it up from my own bottle rather than not buy any drinks and just drink my own. I believe they would be well within their rights to bar you though as your bringing your own, rather than paying for it, though if you are discrete it should go unnoticed.

I was never caught doing this and used to do it regularly, so if your careful and don't take the p***, like buying coke's all night mixing your own whisky in with it and staggering out at the end of the night! They may get a bit suspicious. I would advise to stick to pubs though as most clubs search you so they will confiscate it on entry (though did sometimes put it in a hairspray bottle with an unscrew lid :) )

Morally it's a tough question depends where you go, if it's a nice pub with a decent landlord I would feel bad but a big club then IMHO it's not the end of the world. Not everyone could be bothered to do this and it was certainly the case when I used to do it that if I hadn't done this I wouldn't have gone out as I couldn't afford more than a drink or two, so in theory their gaining a small amount of my business! :D
I think it is immoral to charge £3-£4 for a bottle of water which is very common in london clubs so in cases like that alls fair IMO! :)

As with other posters not usually the done thing. But some venues are either hideously expensive and or have little choice. Reminds me of my younger days going to clubs, everybody smuggled in drink. The floor at the end of the night was a sea of bottles. Happy days indeed! If you are going to clubs with a door policy then its not worth the risk, you will lose your stash, best to drink it beforehand.
  • I remember someone years ago buying tonic and topping it up with a small bottle of gin which one of them had in their bag. As they were leaving the landlord told them he would refuse them entry if they ever went in again plus he would bill them for the loss of proffit he would have made. They didn't do it again cos word got around to the other pubs in the area and they were warned by other landlords not to even think about it. They thought it was giggle untill the landlord stopped them. Not worth it really.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
It is not illegal to open another persons mail unless you intend to commit fraud - this is frequently incorrectly posted:)
    I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p

  • It's actually against the law for a landlord to allow or a customer to bring in alcohol to licensed premises.

I'm a manager of a club and it's soooo obvious when punters have their own drinks in coke/water bottles or hidden in bags or gift bags. I sometimes confiscate the drink if they're too bevvied or too obvious with the threat of being asked to leave the premises. More often than not I feel sorry for someone who can't afford to pay £2 a spirit or £2.60 a pint and get a nice clean glass each time with ice. Another option I have is to have a member of staff hover at the table to spoil their night while they try to get the drink out and to clear glasses as soon as they're empty so they can't fill them up. I've even been known to charge £5 for a large coke and tell them that I'll charge the £1.20 it should be when they stop drinking there own drink. It's a bit of cat and mouse games with these folk.

I can understand it happening in the rip off expensive establishments but just don't get it in a private members club like mine when the prices are very reasonable. It usually only happens at functions and particularly weddings of which we do around 60 to 70 per year.
