ive been thinking about the external hard drives for storage, can you get them pretty cheap? is it a better idea than going for a laptop because of the HD memory?
if i got a external hard drive whats the lowest HD memory id need for general online use and photos etc?
also which are the brands to avoid? what are asus like?? as staples has a 3gb with 160gb HD for £342.

Wow there are you buying a laptop or a portable hard disk drive (HDD)? all an HDD does is store stuff. How big do you need? For 'general online use' nothing, it's all done on the computer, and any bookmarks/favourites/downloads will go on the computer's internal HDD. For photos - well, how many have you got, or more importantly what size are they all? Have a look at 'My Documents'. Right click on the My Documents icon then click properties. It should tell you a size in Mega Bytes (MB). This is for all your 'stuff' - Word docs, music, photos, videos, unless you've messed about with where your stuff is saved. There are 1,000 MB in a GB (Giga Byte). You can have a 500 GB external HDD for around £50. A laptop (or is it a mini laptop you're looking at? Link?) is much more of course. Are you looking at an Asus eeePC? If it's a main computer, I'd want a full size laptop, the screen on these wee machines is very small, as is the keyboard. You can have a full sized laptop for the same price.
