Personal GPS for a beginner

I would like to buy a GPS for walking - well more like strolling really. I don't have a sat nav in my car as I prefer OS maps but these can get tatty really quickly when out in the open air.

I'm not technically brilliant, so don't want to spend much more than £100. Is this possible or am I just dreaming?

If you don't want built-in mapping or route-finding, a Garmin Etrex can be bought for under £60. You have to you use it in conjunction with a map, but you can pre-program routes and then follow it on the GPS, so you only need to use the map occasionally.

I found the more expensive models better, as you get higher screen resolution plus the ability to create routes on a PC and transfer them to the GPS, which is quicker and easier.

If you go for a Garmin, aim for one of the more recent H-type models, as the sensitivity of the receiver is much better.

Yes - their more expensive models can include loadable maps. In fact IIRC even the cheapest models have a "basemap", but the level of detail is very limited with that.

Unfortunately the Garmin maps are IMO very expensive.

Take a look at the Garmin.com website - last time I looked their products were divided into "non-mapping" and "mapping" devices, so you should be able to see quite quickly what the cheapest mapping model is.
