marty, may i suggest that you've probably looked after your ipod a darn sight better than most, if it's lasted that long and still be fine today ??

I certainly tried to look after it. I know plenty of people with even older iPods though. As with all Apple's products, they're very well put together. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

With regards to the issue of DRM, Steve Jobs the CEO of Apple agrees with you, which is why he wrote an open letter calling on the big four record companies to abandon its use. That led to EMI licencing its music to Apple without DRM, which subsequently led to other record companies doing the same with other retailers.

Another vote for Sony, I have a slightly older one than the one mentioned above, and only 8GB, but I think it is excellent, great sound, great battery life, the new one with the FM radio, and iPlayer option looks even better, but I can't justify buying a new one just yet.
Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

I always find it strange that people talk about something being beautiful as a bad thing. As though something has to be ugly to be functional. It's amazing how readily people put up with bad design.

iPods are fantastic to look at and to use. They're also better built than any other media players I've seen. I've just passed my four year old iPod onto my daughter and it still works as well as the day I bought it.

I did not say it was a bad thing it being lovely to look at.
There are machines out there with enhanced functionality, e.g inbuilt radio, graphic equaliser etc which can add a lot to the machine.

I have an old creative mp3 player which is still going strong after many years (more than four) so they are not all built to break.

I quite agree. I posted all the above responses from my iPod, which is a nice feature.

My main point was that how they look isn't the main selling feature of iPods. It's certainly a selling feature, but not the main one. Cheap knock-off iPods which look pretty much the same as real ones aren't a good investment for obvious reasons.
