Hi all, my Stepdad has recently had to go part time, he was working full time but due to health reasons had to drop to three days a week instead of full time. I was wondering, can he claim Working Tax Credits or anything? In their household are my Stepdad & Mum (Both 59) & recently my unemployed 25yr old Brother who has moved back temporarily while he finds work & has just signed on for JSA, he should be joining the Army in 2009.
I'm not sure if my Stepdad works 30+ hours, all I know is he does three days but I can ask. My Mum works 25hrs a week. Is it likely they can claim anything? Not just WTC but anything at all to help? Healthwise there doesn't seem to be anything, he had a heart attack 4.5yrs ago & where he worked was too cold & tiring & he was struggling, so they offered him a job at another (Warmer) branch just three days a week.
Thanks for any help! (Or if there's anything other than JSA Bro could get? He's struggling to find even agency work but has an Army interview January 6th)

Your brother won't be able to get anything else, as he can't get Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit due to living 'at home'.
If your stepdad works 30 hours, then they may qualify for some WTC -- but if he's only just dropped his hours, then more likely not until next tax year. If he doesn't work 30 hours, then no they won't qualify (to the best of my knowledge)Cheryl0 -
Don't forget that your brother should be contributing to the household out of his JSA.0

lol sorry i'm confused? Wouldn't that be up to my Mum & Stepdad? And the question was about whether my SD can get any help as he's had to drop hours & I didn't know if there was anything they should be claiming but aren't. I need to know about any benefits or help he can get not how the family divide their own incomes up iyswim.
I don't think he can get WTC but i'll find out the hours he does & check. It's a shame there doesn't seem to be any help as he's had to drop to three days through no fault of his own after working full time all his life until now & other people like myself with medical problems get help so why not him? Still I think they'll cope but thought as this site knows all about money & help i'd check, thanks for replying!0 -

Help can take many forms and it's surprising how many young people think JSA is pocket money rather than for paying bills and food. Just pointing out the obvious.0
