Paying off bank of scotland overdraft

Hi all!

Wondered if someone could help me!

I had a student bank account with the Bank of Scotland which I opened 6 or 7 years ago. I stupidly ran up the overdraft and then in my stupid naive teenager state of mind ignored the problem. Anyway, to cut a long story short they passed the debt on to a credit management company who then mucked up the account (saying I never made any payments whilst they were cashing the cheques) and then the debt was passed onto another credit company who seemed a bit more pro than the first one. I made regular payments every month and then they contacted me in October to say that if I paid £1431 then the account would be closed and the BoS would cancel off the rest of the money £477.44. I decided that this would be a good thing and we borrowed the money from my father in law paying him back the same amount every month that I was paying towards the debt through the credit company but as it was a lesser amount it means that I will get it paid off quicker. It was also the last thing that was lingering about that was casuing damage to my credit rating.

2 months on and I checked my digital banking for BoS (I no longer have a main account with them so don't really use my digital banking with them) and the account is still showing as being -£477.44. I have had a letter from the credit company saying:

"We confirm recepit of your payment of £1431.00 received in full and final settlement. This account has now been marked as closed and returned to our clients."

I am just wondering why BoS haven't 'closed' the account. Do you think they are going to want me to pay back the other £477.44? I am planning on contacting them but want to be prepared before speaking to someone about it becasue I know if they tell me I have to pay it I'll probably start crying on the phone! Also, where would I stand with regards to having been told by credit company that the account was now 'settled' if it hasn't been?

Many thanks for taking the time to read and apologies for it being so long!

Just wanted to bump this back up to see if anyone has any advice or could point me in the right direction? It would be much appreciated.

  • Hi

You should contact BOS - probably just a delay in updating their system as they will have to write off the £477 as goodwill for early settlement. I am sure they will confirm this if you call them, I had the same problem with halifax not so long back.

You have the proof you paid up and the letter states the matter is now closed so don't worry about it.

    Good luck!

    Hi!

Thanks for that. Going to contact them next week. Thanks for the reassurance!
