Card Protection Plans

I've just opened an A&L Premier Direct Current Account. When I 'phoned up to activate my card, the bloke asked if I wanted card protection. I said I'd think about it. It was £29 per year or £70 for 3 years. It seemed to offer quite a lot of benefits (particularly if travelling abroad) with regard to losing passports, cards etc.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this or other similar policies?
