But the employer is not entitled to expect people to pay out £50 odd out of their own money for taxis

It is not really the employers problem or concern how their employees get home, especially during normal working hours. Christmas eve is not a bank holiday.

On CE, the buses and local trains stop between 5pm-6pm.

Where in the country is this? I have never heard of that before. Trains run as normal here and buses are a Sunday service till 1am. Get a lift from a mate/family member if worst comes to the worst. Surely you know someone with a car you could give a tenner to?

It IS the employers problem if they have a "heart" on the one hand and have never expected employees to work that late before on a Christmas Eve....we all know things start "winding down" about lunchtime Christmas Eve...

Why does Scrooge come to mind here?

I still think there could be a "set-up" going on here by the employer.....but, even if I am wrong on that, then that sorta behaviour by said employer is hardly conductive to good employer/employee relations is it?

I would expect any employees I had to work hard for me...but fairness and shall I say a bit of "enlightened self-interest" should always be borne in mind....

i would hope any realistic employer would at least place some thought onto their employee's getting home!!
i think you need to go round everyone working xmas eve and see who gets what method home
then what options are available to them
    eg last bus/train
see if any drivers are going their way so could car share etc
then pass this info to the manager(s) asking what can be done about this as they can hardly leave staff stranded.

another factor(that affects myself) is chilcare.my boys nursery shuts early on xmas eve so ive had to make arrangements to be free to collect him, perhaps some in your work will be the same?

i once had to walk oer 15 miles home in a snowstorm after the buses were cancelled and my employer didnt care(Balmoral hotel if anyones interested!)
however i wouldnt want/expect anyone else to have to do the same!

Why not? Its not the employers concern how their employee's get too, and get home from work, especially if normal finish time is 8pm. I will have to pay a double fare taxi to get home as I am working christmas day night. Theres no way I can moan about it to my employer as it is no concern to them that I do not drive.

Id be pee'ed off too BTW, but more so at myself that I dont drive and have to pay out more.

But then...why should you be p....d off with "yourself" because you dont drive.....employers are NOT entitled to expect everyone to have a car.

In this day and age of greater environmental awareness as well..........

I admit that ANYONE (employer/shop/whoever) who expects ME to have a car to suit THEM soon gets very short shrift indeed.

    maybe you're right
now all the op needs is a driving centre that can teach them, get them a test, pass the test, buy a car and be ready to go in the 4 days notice the op has had.
even better if they can then get a psv and buy a bus to cover all bases

I do kind of agree with you. It would be lovely if employers all had a heart and were sympathetic towards their employees. BUT, in my case, I knew I would have to more often than not, pay to get too or from work. Christmas is no different apart from taxis are half or double fare(I have different firms to use but depends how busy they are). I knew the hours of my shift and applied for the job anyway.

Yes its carp...but they are business after all. To find an employer who will pay taxi/bus fares is very good...but then if I did drive I think id be pee'ed off at having to use my car when joe bloggs next to me who doesnt drive gets travel expenses.

Swings and roundabouts I suppose....and this is coming from someone in the same situation as the OP.
