Malaysian, extra leg room. Any chance???

Travelling with Malaysian Manchester via KL to Sydney in Feb and back from Perth.
Rang them asking about extra legroom and was told those seats are only given out at check in and the best option was to get there when they opened 4 hours before take off.
We can do that if there is a chance it might work, but any other tips, suggestions would be useful.
Thanks in advance.

Dream on is my view - my husband is 6foot 6inches, and we have never had exit row seats whenever we have turned up at the airport (even when we turned up 6 hours before and were gold frequent flyers). We usually fly long haul through to New Zealand, hubby has to suffer for 24 hours (as does the person in front of him, who is unable to recline their seat - even that plea does not work at check in...).
Anyway, it is always worth a try, and best of luck, but I would say your chances are virtally nil unless you are a super duper platinum frequent flyer.0 -
They don't allocate the front rows or exit seats until checkin and we always ask for them at checkin if we are early and are successful 50% of the time.
The best option is to fly traveller plus ( not available on Malaysian) as this gives a lot more room without paying busuiness class prices. Malaysian airlines are pretty good though.travelover0 -
Get to the airport EARLY. Ask at check in and if you get no success, go to customer services and you should be in luck.(".)0

Thanks for the replies so far.
I assume that for the exit row seats they want to `see` that you are physically able before they let you have them. Anyone know if this is the reason?
If it is, does that mean if we get them at Manchester we will get them on all 4 flights or do we have to arrive early in Perth for the return flights.
Thanks again.0 -
I'm 6'2" and when I last flew Malaysian I asked on checkin about the possibility of the exit row, but was told that they were unable to give them to myself, my wife and my daughter, as the other 2 seats would be "wasted", but I could have one myself. I said no, obviously.
Although when we got on the plane, the people in the exit row a few back from us were much shorter than me...
That said, Malaysian have the best leg-room of any airline (or joint best, anyway) and I wasn't that uncomfortable on the 14-or-so hour flight to KL. Those extra 4 inches could make a big difference though (as the actress said to the.... whoops, not the place for that joke!)0 -
When we flew Malaysian to NZ, we asked about upgrades and she said, no can't upgrade, but can give you an extra legroom seat, so we had those. It's just the luck of the draw, as we got there about 2 hours before flight time.
They guy sat next to us though was really tall - he took the seat and his family sat in the row behind.I'm so sexy it's a wonder my underpants don't explode.0
