meter readings, how often

I've decided to take meter readings, how many do i take per day and for how long?

I took one when we got home at 6pm, we'd been out from like 1:30pm.

6pm

L - 43466
N - 52320

Then decided to look again at 10pm and they read

L - 43466
N - 52330

Normal going up by 10 is quiet a lot for 4hrs surely.

    10 units in 4 evening hours = 60-70p.

Depends what you use - Lights, TV? Computer? kettle? Cooker? Anything else?

Doesn't seem too high to me.

EVENTUALLY....take weekly readings of gas and electric, and telephone charges at the same time each week....then rattle the figures to death...any sudden increases should be explained.
Lidl do an Energy Monitor..feed in your charges and you can work out the cost of running each appliance.

I read mine once a month and enter them into the energy company website, I get a monthly statement and can see if the usage is going up and can check what if anything has been used more frequently..........that way I can increase my monthly payment if required.

I keep a record on my computer so if I need to speak to the energy company I have the dates and readings to hand along with the account numbers. Power companies are very good at giving you estimated readings for much more power usuage than the actual amount, so they end up with more of your cash in theor bank account. If I get an estimated account I read the meter and phone in or go on the internet and put the up to date reading in.
