Strange, my searches said it's a made up name of the writer, then another site said it was desperate/despair, but it sounds like desparate : )

According to Wiki "Despereaux was born as a castle-mouse and the only living mouse of his mother's last litter and named by her from of the many depairs of that time."
They presumably mean despairs and it could be that this is the answer they are after.

The site below says "The story is about Despereaux, a tiny, sickly mouse with massive ears and is born with his eyes open and likes music and honey and everyone doesn't like him. His name means "despair."
