Is there a website that shows average insurance costs?

All those comparison sites make you type in loads of details everytime - I just want a rough estimate for some cars I am interested in - no point looking at them further if the insurance is a lot higher on a certain one

There is no such thing as a rough estimate due to the variety of risk factors and the sheer number of different insurers.

Most comparison sites let you save quotes. So all you have to do is fill in your full information for the first car that you're considering and save the quote; for the second car just recall and amend the vehicle details from the first quote and so on.

But as ever, if you're using comparison sites, do consider the policy cover rather than just the price.

Every car has an insurance group (ranging from 1-20 IIRC).

Everyone's quote for the same group car will be different due to age, address, garage/street parking, etc etc etc. But if you buy a higher group car your insurance will be more expensive than for a lower group.

What you could do is get quotes on a (for example) group 4 and a group 10 model and get some idea of the difference. Then you would have a very rough idea of cost when looking at a group 2, group 7, etc. This would be a very, very rough guide only and once you settle on a car you should of course get quotes before buying.

The group that a car comes under is a combination of power, demographic of drivers and how attractive it is to thieves. One of the reasons I got an Astra rather than a Focus is that for the same power it was a group 4 rather than a group 7.

Opera (and Firefox) have utilities to automatically fill in forms.

You could configure that to fill out all your details leaving you only the more obscure boxes which dont take too long.

Or, as I normally do, just slap the keyboard filling the boxes with any old random lettering (ensuring the email addy is a valid format e.g. [EMAIL="spam@home.com"]spam@home.com[/EMAIL])

As long as you get the critical ones correct, DOB, postcode, licence held time, NCB and car details that is all you (they) need.

I'm always sceptical that for every site I enter my email address, I am going to get flooded with unwelcome spam emails, the same for my postal address.

If the quote looks good, simply go back and fill it in properly.

then you just use disposable email address for sites you worry about getting spammed from
