How do I set outlook express as my default?

At the bottom you can select Make Default

I don't know why but every now and again microsoft outlook overides it and I had a mental block on how to sort it out.

.....................or if you have XP SP 2 go Start -> All Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults -> Custom -> Choose a Default E-mail Program.
