Pay at Pump Petrol Stations

Like I said, it depends on the pump terminal.

However normally all UPTs are set up that if the same card is used in the pump gain it will only pre-auth for the origional amount:

Max Spend £70, you fill up with £30, use the card again within 24 hours and your max spend is reduced to £40 at that station.

Another item to note that terminal will not keep seeking authorisation for lower amounts to see what works, this is a gateway to fraud and is prohibited in the authorisation system, often multiple requests in a short period will always default to decline / refer and cause problems for customers.

I have the technical spec somewhere for card terminals it spells out what can and can't be done, however it spans many, many pages, and is incredibly boring! It is just impossible to go into every possible option that is available, and some is sensitive anyway so could not be discussed here.
