Avast Problems - Please help?

Hi, I've recently installed Avast, but I'm experiencing problems. Unfortunately the "allow" "disallow" buttons are missing from the right hand pop up box. There is a very fine top line of each button that works when clicked on, but it is not possible to see which button is which.

Also, when the internet is connected, the Virgin homepage no longer comes on automatically. When I click on the Virgin dialog box (to connect to the web) the Connect/Disconnect box dissapears after connection, so that I am unable to disconnect from the internet. When I click on the Virgin desktop icon in order to disconnect that way, a box pops up which says:
Microsoft Runtime Error. Program: C:\ProgramFiles\Virgin.NetBroadband\Stdialup.exe. Abnormal Program Termination.

Plus, there was an Avast database recovery icon on the taskbar, but now it's gone.

When Avast was first installed, I did a scan which found a trojan (which I hope I have removed). Last night I did a MalwareBytes scan which found nothing. Then did a Spybot search which found a different problem: HiJackers PixieBar (which I hope has now gone).

Are these Avast problems occuring because of re-infections or has it just downloaded oddly?

Can anyone help please?

Uninstall Avast,it`s causing too much hassle and download and install the free version of anti-virus and firewall from Comodo

    Did avast work ok initially?

Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall?

    Download HIJACK THIS

SCAN and post the log here so we can see what your computers doing

(Also suggest a FULL malwarebytes scan as opposed to a quick one)

I’ve been running AVAST for a good few years without any problems, then recently after one of their updates it went haywire. So what I did was uninstall my firewall (Sunbelt Kerio) and re-installed it. That sorted out the problem.

So if you are running a firewall, then it might be an idea to uninstall/reinstall it, to see if it resolves the problem.

Comodo Firewall is one of the best free firewalls and its one of the highest scoring http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php. You don't have to install the anti-virus with it but it comes with defense+ which helps protect your computer by monitoring important files and registry keys. If you set Defense + to learning mode for the first few days then back to safe mode you shouldn't get any popups. For a antivirus i would recommend Antivir or Avast they are probably best but Comodo is getting better and will hopefully be as good as the firewall one day. http://www.comodo.com/
    Sunbelt is awful

    Comodo is a fantastic 'firewall'
The only reason I no longer use it is because it stopped my lexmark printer from working (Which is far as I know, theyve still not addressed)

  • Thanks for your replies.

I installed PC Tools firewall and Avast a few days ago (which replaced Sunbelt and AVG) on advice from aliEnRIK.

Avast hasn't been right since the install (the database recovery icon was ok at first but disappeared after I installed Spybot). I've heard Comodo is good, but from what I've read, I'm not sure if I have enough knowledge to set it up properly.

I did a full scan with MalwareBytes last night and it found no problems, then I scanned with Spybot and found the HiJackers Pixiebar infection. I appear to keep getting infections that should have been removed, but then one of them returns in another location or a new one develops. I'm being extra careful what click on! I wasn't sure whether the presence of malware might be the reason I'm having problems with Avast.

I have just done another full scan with Avast and no problems were found. I'll do a full scan with MalwareBytes and then Spybot and report the results back to you, tomorrow. Hopefully there'll be no more infections and I can uninstall and re-install Avast and it'll work ok.

Well its certainly a known issue with them as its even on their own forums. Must be particular software/printers then (OR they have indeed fixed it now)
It effected both mine AND my fathers pcs
