Credit Card lost or stolen – help please

I wonder if anyone can help? Has anyone been in this situation before? I am new to this forum and I just join to see if I can get any advice
I had my 2 credit cards lost or stolen and it has been fraudulently used for a large amount of money, (I mean thousands of pounds). One card was AMEX and one was Abbey
I think because this large amount of money both credit cards are telling me that I am liable for the amount of money used on the credit cards. (and their fraud department has apparently investigating the issue and close the case). Has anyone used the Ombusdman to complaint to, is a similar case.
I don’t know whether to write Ombusdman or to speak to a solicitor (I assume solicitor will ask for lots of money which I don’t have at the moment). I have never been in this difficult situation before and now banks are chasing for the money.

Were they lost OR stolen?
And where were they used?These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!
I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!0
