Need 1.27 GB for a backup

I need to backup 1.27gb of tomtom maps but don't want to put them on my hard drive ijn case of a crash (yes I'm v pessimistic) can I copy them onto a dvd disc or is that just not possible?
Any other suggestions without having to buy anything would be gratefully received
I haven't got one!

  • You shouldn't have any problem with burning them onto a data DVD.

How about opening a G-mail account & using the shell drive extension software to use it as a virtual hard drive? (2GB limit)

Before you get too excited, Im not sure what the maximum file size is for Gmail so it may be worth checking first? It might be 10MB per e-mail?
  • Damn, I wouldn't like to try and send a 1.27Gb File by e-mail, I only have 256KB upload, it would certainly take a few hours to do that - possibly overnight

Are you trying to do the same as me then?

I've just tried to put it on dvd but it wouldn't work. Is there a particular kind I should be using +r -r etc?

Failing the DVD option, you could try spanning it over two CDs. I have used this before (in a different situation) and it worked fine.

I read a review the other day about Data DVDs being unreliable for storing important files etc. on as the data or part of the data can sometimes become corrupted and you can't access the file in concern... :(

The CD option is probably best.

I don't think you can just "open" a Gmail account. I believe someone has to invite you with an invitation...

If you want a Gmail account, send me a PM with your email address and I will send you an invite... ;)

Is it compressable? It might compress to a much smaller zip file.. and may fit onto a normal CD.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Buy a 2Gb memory pen or even a portable Hard Drive that way you can backup all your data

Also do a search for on-line backups
