Hello

I was thinking of getting the pocket surfer for the internet but have noticed that the Iphone is now availiabe on pay as you go with free internet access for 12 months. Therefore, as i could do with a new phone as well ,would i be better getting this. Can you buy things etc using it like ordinary computers. Is it any good.

Alternatively are Blackberry or Google phones better. I am not technically minded.

Just to add i any deal i get has tp be pay as you go as i don't have a good credit record (discharger bankrupt).

As far as i know you can buy stuff, its a tad expensive for a phone mind,

the iPhone (not I Phone, or IPhone ) is available on PAYG..

It is a great phone, however, it does have some drawbacks.

1 - No Flash - some websites won't render correctly, as there isn't the adobe flash player built in.. you're gonna get the same issue with the "Pocket Surfer"

2 - Small screen, If this is your only device for getting on the internet, then the screen is tiny.. if it is a secondary device, then it'll do the job when you need to use it

3 - blackberries don't include internet usage normally in tarrifs, and i'm unsure if these are available on PAYG, and i'm sure the G1 phone is t-mobile and contract only right now (and rather ugly too!)

4 - shopping on an iPhone is possible, but may be slow and laborious.

2 reasons why i cant see myself getting 1, the iPhone is good for listening to music etc but i cant see myself reading any text on it eg from a website, writing would be too small

You can but the Google phone but costs £250+ for the sim free open version (it's actually for Developers only. But anyone can join the developers network and get the phone.)

iPhone is just good for music and video.

Blackberry are good for emails and keeping in touch.

Not used the pocket surfer but have heard good things about it.

I have an iPod touch, which is basically an iPhone without the phone. It's fine for occasional websurfing, checking emails, etc. As long as they don't have Flash, websites will work on it the same way they work on your computer. If you double-tap something, be it a column of text or a picture, it zooms to fill the screen. I occasionally post on here using it and haven't encountered any problems. There's also a huge library of software available at Apple App Store which is constantly growing.

I'm moving to the US next year, otherwise I'd get an iPhone myself.

I have the iPhone, got the 3G one on launch day

It is fine for web surfing etc, yes the screen is relatively small but the text is extremely clear and zooming in and out is easy. As for using it to buy stuff, yes it's all possible. I've used mine for that (amazon has a special website, ebay has an app) and banking is pretty straightforward. The keyboard is fine for typing text but when you start to use text / number mixes (login names and passwords) then it can be a little bit cumbersome.

As other people have said, it is good for occasional use in that respect but a 'proper' laptop or PC would be advisable for long periods. Definitely recommend one though for occasional internet use, email, music, videos and even the occasional phone call / text.

I had the original iPhone and then the 3G and I have not had any problems.
The majority of websites work fine and alot of websites have made mobile or iPhone versions of there sites (e.g. Amazon)
I use it alot for internet, I use it alot when i am on trains and generally about town in shops (in particular, looking up internet prices for items i see in the shops!)
I find it very easy to use and have never had a problem reading any text as it is quite easy just to zoom in.
For a "pocket surfer", I would be brave enough to say that it is the best around, as Apple have made it so easy and intuative to use.

I've had an iPhone for about 2 weeks and I love it I'm totally addicted to it. I'm registered partially sighted and I don't struggle too much with the screen, you can zoom in a lot on the web pages. I love the App store, there are so many good free apps.

It's good being able to access email, ebay, facebook, MSE anywhere you want, makes bus journeys more bearable

The camera is a bit naff must say, can't zoom, can't record videos, can't edit the photos, can't even text them

You can't bluetooth any data either which I think is totally rubbish.

And you'd think having itunes/ipod on your phone would mean you can have any song as your ringtone but you can't. You have to clip the songs down to 30 seconds, change the extension of the file then you can upload them via itunes.

The worst bit about the internet is the lack of (and possibly never will have) flash and media players for web sites. The flash is technically against Apples EULA

I have shopped, browsed, downloaded e-books and read them, played games, listen to music and such, with very little trouble

Just remember though, it is NOT a computer, so yu can not just download anything, applications need to be bought from the itunes application store

It's a difficult thing without knowing exactly what you want to use it for. I have one (as I said) and use it as a phone and mp3 player the most. I have recently bought an Acer Aspire One netbook, and that with mobile broadband, provides a MUCH better surfing experience for my comute

Do you have specific needs and uses you are looking for?

Far from it. Pinch the screen and zoom in, then tilt sideways to view in landscape. Easy. Zoom in as much as you need and scroll with your finger.
