Freesat from Sky - Lying, cheating, rip off merchants

A while ago we cancelled our sky subscription and decided to invest in a 'freesat' card, at £20 it seemed like a good idea. Within a couple of days of receiving the card we decided that it was a waste of money, and I contacted sky, by email (as advised in a letter from themselves) asking for the card to be cancelled, and my money to be refunded. (I did this well within the 8 working days allowed by sky) Simple, or so I thought.
A week later, I forwarded my original email, and asked fo confirmation that this request was being action to no-avail. I week or so later, I called sky and asked them what the hell was going on and was told that although their letter said I could cancel by email, I couldn't, and I needed to return the viewing card. I asked for a note to be added to my record, stating the fact that I had been given incorrect information by their company.
Now here's my mistake, I returned the card by standard mail rather than recorded delivery. And now they claim that they haven't received the card, and they're trying to tell me my original email was outside of the allowed timeframe, even though last time I called them they hadn't even seen the original email. I also have a copy of the original email in my sent items folder, which cleary shows the date being only 2 days after I received the card.
It appears that extortionate subscription fees are not the only way that sky can steal from the british public

Thats appalling. I'm not too sure what you can do. Is there anyway you can clain via Royalmail ?
I'm also sure I read somewhere here that you could use the card you already have from sky to access Freesat if you cancel sky ? I spent 15 minutes on the phone trying to cancel them only to be told I had to give 30 days notice. I've now done so andwill be going over to freesat beginning of Feb. Between that and freeview I will have most of the channels I watch anyway (just not FX)

As it's only £20, just walking away might be preferable to suing them.Eh?? I give up!! Towel is getting thrown in here!0

Thanx for your comments guys, isn't this a great way to let off a bit of steam!
As greenwich suggests, i think I'm just gonna have to walk away. 20 quid really isn't worth the time or the effort.0 -
yes but don't you have to pay a court fee to make a claim with the small claims court (which i don't think is recoverable). may end up costing you quite a bit as well.
day in court, have to take day off work (assuming that you work).

Contact Royal Mail and tell them what happened. However if they ask whether it was 'valuable' say no and state the the £20 is some kind of 'administrative cost' which it is really isn't it, or have I misunderstood the situation? that way they will refund you the cost of the lost mail up to £30. Call 01752 387112 instead of the ripoff 0845 number and you won't pay as much to speak to them either.
I have just 5 channels at home so don't understand the complexities behind Sky. I think they're daylight robbers at the rates they charge but I guess it's someone's choice to sign up with them.0 -
Threaten them with court when talking to a supervisor, not the up front "no authority to do anything" CSA. They are more likely to back off then and do a refund.
Surely your old Sky card will give you access to the free channels anyway, so imho you were mis-sold the Freesat card anyway.
In future when posting anything official or important, get a proof of posting certificate from your Post Office, it costs nothing and helps you prove that you did post something to their address on a specific day and also speeds compensation from PO if due as said in a previous post.
There is always Freeview if you are able to receive it.ac's lovechild0
